Macramé: A Thread Through Time
For thousands of years, macramé has woven its story through the hands of people and across civilizations. Its earliest knots trace back to the desert winds, to the Arab weavers of the 13th century who used this technique to tie the fringes of their fabrics. The word macramé is believed to come from the Arabic word migramah, meaning fringe or embroidery.
Through trade routes, the art of knotting traveled to Spain and then throughout Europe. It adorned Victorian interiors with decorative lace wall hangings and followed sailors across the seas — who, during long voyages, crafted knotted ropes into keepsakes such as bracelets, belts, and decorative nets. In many cultures around the world, it is seen as a symbol of protection, luck, and prosperity.
But it was in the 1970s, at the dawn of the bohemian movement, that macramé experienced a true creative revival. A symbol of freedom, nature, and self-expression, it flourished in homes and hearts in the form of wall hangings, bags, jewelry, and plant holders.
Today, macramé has made a graceful return, reinvented by a new generation of passionate artisans. Combined with natural gemstones, organic materials, and contemporary shapes, it gives life to unique creations filled with soul.
